# The hidden cost of design errors (and how 3D prevents them)

Anyone who has built knows the scene: work is progressing, someone notices a beam clashing with a duct, and what's already built has to come down. That rework has a name and a cost, and it's bigger than most people budget for.

The short version

- Deviations that end in rework average 12.4% of total installed cost (CII).
- Most of it starts in design, and bad data caused 14% of all rework in 2020 (Autodesk and FMI).
- A 2D drawing forces each team to interpret it alone; the 3D model removes that ambiguity.
- Conflicts surface on their own when the whole team reviews the same model.
- An error fixed in the model costs an afternoon; on site it costs demolition and weeks.

## What fixing it costs

The Construction Industry Institute studied nine industrial projects and found that deviations ending in rework, repair or replacement cost **an average of 12.4% of total installed cost**. On a twenty-billion-peso project, that would be about 2.5 billion pesos that weren't in the budget.

Time costs even more than money. Every correction drags the schedule, the schedule drags handovers, and late handovers bring unhappy clients.

## Catching it before you build

One figure changes the math: most of those deviations start in design. The same CII study found that design changes, errors and omissions accounted for 79% of the cost of deviations. And Autodesk and FMI estimated that decisions made with bad data caused **14% of all construction rework** in 2020. The savings come from finding the problem while it is still a file and not a wall.

> An error fixed in the model costs an afternoon of work. The same error fixed on site costs demolition, materials and weeks.

## Why a 3D model finds what a plan hides

A 2D plan forces every person to interpret it in their head. The architect sees one thing, the engineer another, the site manager a third. All three interpretations seem to match, until they're built.

A three-dimensional model removes that ambiguity. Everyone looks at the same thing. And when the full team (architecture, structure, MEP, sales) reviews the project on a single model, the conflicts surface on their own: the duct running where the beam goes, the door that opens into the cabinet, the spot where headroom falls short.

## Where errors usually hide

- **Structure versus services:** the duct, pipe or cable tray that runs exactly where a beam goes.
- **Clear heights:** the ceiling that drops lower than planned once all the services are added.
- **Doors and furniture:** the door that opens into the kitchen cabinets, the closet that blocks the way or the window that hits the railing.
- **Circulation:** stairs, corridors and entrances that look wide enough on the drawing and turn out tight in three dimensions.
- **Changes nobody passed on:** a finish or a dimension adjusted in one discipline that no one updated in the others.

## How our review works

With [Vista D360](https://inviewd.com/en/vista-d360.html) we turn the project's plans, mockups and renders into a complete 3D model, and review it in sessions with the leads from each area. Decisions are recorded in minutes and on video, so there's traceability of what changed and why.

More than a marketing tool, it is a technical review that pays for itself with the first conflict it prevents.

## When to run the review

There are three moments when a review on the model pays off most: before pricing and contracting the works, because contractors quote on a closed design; before launching pre-sales, so buyers aren't sold something that changes later; and before starting each work front, to confirm that what is about to be built is what was approved.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much does rework cost on a construction project?

In the projects studied by the Construction Industry Institute, deviations that ended in rework, repair or replacement cost an average of 12.4% of total installed cost.

### What is clash detection?

It's reviewing the complete project in 3D to find the points where two elements occupy the same space, such as a beam and a duct, before they are built.

### Why does a 3D model reduce design errors?

Because everyone looks at the same thing. On a 2D drawing each discipline interprets it on its own; in the model, conflicts are visible and discussed over a single object.

### What is Vista D360?

It's the Inviewd service that turns drawings, physical models and renders into a 3D model and reviews it in sessions with the leaders of each area. Decisions are recorded in minutes and on video.
